The department of Physical Therapy at the Antonine University, integrated in the Public health Faculty, offers a four-year, full-time professional program as an entry into a career in physical therapy. Learning opportunities incorporate classroom, laboratory, research, and clinical education.

 
     
     
The profession of Physical Therapy  
 

Physical therapy is a health profession with a theoretical foundation for a wide range of clinical applications including the preservation, development, and restoration of maximum human function. It is also used to help patients to overcome the emotional and physical barriers that may hinder recovery. The physical therapist tend to provide excellence in the delivery of services aimed at preventing and slowing the onset and progression of diseases, hence, facilitating the recovery from conditions resulting from traumatic or overuse injuries and other causes.

 
     
     
Work environment
 
 

Physiotherapists work in
outpatient,
inpatient,
community based settings such as:
hospitals,
rehabilitation facilities,
clinics,
physician offices,
skilled nursing and extended care facilities,
adult day care programs,
wellness centers,
home health agencies,
schools, and
private industry.

Advising
A candidate interested in becoming a physiotherapist must have a willingness to work with ill and disabled people on a regular basis. He/She, therefore, must be physically and mentally fit in order to fulfill the demands of the profession requiring also good communication skills, creativity, physical dexterity and coordination, organization and self-motivation.

 
     
     
Program of studies  
 

The Physical therapy program at the Antonine University is an entry-level, graduate professional program. The degree is awarded upon completion of 8 semesters -equivalent to four years in length curriculum.

The program is delivered both in French and English, in a continuous and sequential manner, over the four years of study and involves:
participation in lectures,
discussions,
laboratories,
open lab practice sessions, and
research.
In addition to the classroom, laboratory, and research components of the program, students are required to participate in part-time or full-time clinical internships in medical centers to complete the clinical education component of the program.

The curriculum is designed around several educational topics area or pillars including:
musculoskeletal,
neuromuscular,
cardiopulmonary,
administration,
research, and
clinical education.

The knowledge base for these pillars is developed in foundational sciences such as:
anatomy,
physiology,
neuroscience, and
movement science.
Students, sharing the majority of their courses with other disciplines of the Public Health faculty, have the opportunity to add preferential electives to the core curriculum.

 
     
     
Admission and requirements  
 

Admission to the professional program is on a competitive, space available basis.
Applicants must fulfill certain entrance criteria upon which they are evaluated:

Submit an application in the Admission’s office;
Have a Lebanese baccalaureate diploma or an equivalent with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 12 over 20;
Pass a written examination of biology, physics and a language evaluation of French and English;
Present a medical certificate of his/her physical state.
